Meeting Growing Demand

BNSF Railway is beginning construction on an intermodal facility in northwest Maricopa County as part of the Logistics Park Phoenix project. This facility will add critical rail capacity to help keep goods moving, support local businesses, and ensure Arizona remains competitive as the state continues to grow.

Existing rail infrastructure can no longer keep pace with rising demand, creating bottlenecks that slow supply chains and increase costs for consumers and businesses. This intermodal facility will help relieve that strain by shifting more long-distance freight from trucks to trains, reducing pressure on highways and creating the flexibility needed to move the materials that power housing, manufacturing, and retail growth — strengthening Arizona’s long-term economic stability.

WHY NOW?

Maricopa County has driven much of Arizona’s population growth over the past decade and remains one of the fastest growing regions in the country. At the same time, expansion in advanced manufacturing, housing construction, and retail is increasing demand for materials and consumer goods.

This growth affects the entire state. The most recent Arizona Freight Plan projects freight movement will increase by roughly 60 percent by 2045, yet existing rail facilities are already operating near capacity. Without added freight capacity, Arizona faces higher transportation costs, more highway congestion, longer delivery delays, and reduced economic competitiveness.

What’s an intermodal facility?

An intermodal facility is where shipping containers move between trains and trucks. Trains carry goods long distances, and cranes then transfer the containers to trucks for local delivery. It connects long-haul rail with the final miles to stores and warehouses.

Construction Details

BNSF has started construction on an intermodal facility on its 4,320-acre property in northwest Maricopa County. This 350-acre project will add much-needed rail capacity to keep freight moving as Arizona continues to grow. Construction began in early 2026, with site preparation starting in the spring and operations expected in early 2027. The schedule is designed to bring this added capacity online as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts on nearby roads and neighbors.

  • Most construction traffic is planned to enter the site from US 60.
  • Construction traffic will be routed away from local schools, and contractors will avoid peak drop off and pick up times.
  • Higher truck volumes are scheduled largely outside the school year.
  • Strong dust control measures are in place during construction.
